The organizers of the cycling tour around France will probably not use models to award prizes after each race, according to The Times (England).
Amaury Sports (ASO) is set to make the Tour de France the second Grand Tour to leave the podium girls. Last year, they also replaced models in the Vuelta a Espana (around Spain), with men and women dressed gracefully. Some races for women are also turning to boys to give prizes.
Modeling for cycling has been increasingly criticized, especially after Maja Leye was sacked by world champion Peter Sagan on the 2013 Tour of Flanders podium. Last season, Belgian Jan Bakelants also apologized to the models for being sexually explicit. Flanders Diamond Tour organizers are also apologizing for the use of bikini models.
The wave of replacements for sports promoters originated from the Professional Darts Association (PDC), when they were no longer used by the beauties to bring their players to the arena (walk-on girls ). The F1 organizers also no longer use grid girls to mark the position of the driver before the start. Instead, F1 offers the opportunity for young drivers.
In addition to the Tour de France, boxers are also considering eliminating ring girls.
